OK, I've finished it and I like more than I dislike. Alex Berenson says that this novel is about revenge, but despite their best efforts, no one really succeeds in achieving their goal. Our hero, John Wells, has become unstable and I can only hope that Berenson can bring him back from the brink for the next three books that he is expected to write in this series.

The reason they were after him becomes clear later . . I loved the book as well as Charlie's other four books . There are three in the caught stealing and two vampire books as well No Dominion and another one . I read each book in about a day as you cannot put them down , truely a roller coaster ride of excitment and I identified with the hero . I can't wait till he writes more .

Shar replies:

I had to quit reading after about 40 pages. The violence was gratuitous and I was annoyed that the author hadn't adequately explained why the bad guys targeted Hank.

Well, bless Lehane for choosing a book as fine as James Crumley's LAST GOOD KISS. Crumley is the BEST crime novelist America has ever produced (hear that, fans of Parker, Hammett, Connelly, et all?) and leaves writers like Lehane very much in the shade. Try some Crumley and you'll see what I mean...

My bad -- David is correct about Tom Perrotta, and the quote in the Times article is correctly attributed to him.

I have used my god-like powers to go back into my original post and correct the text.

Thanks, David.
